Israel's Strategic Incompetence in Gaza by Daniel Pipes

This is the first of three postings that I'm directing the reader to at Daniel Pipes' own blog. The other two follow.

In this first article, Pipes charges that not only has the existing Israeli government created the present Gaza crisis, but that it's a gross miscalculation of the two overriding facts of the Middle East today.

First he states that "the team in charge in Jerusalem created the Gaza problem". We all can remember when now "Prime Minister Ehud Olmert immortally explained in 2005 the forthcoming unilateral Israeli withdrawal from Gaza: "We [Israelis] are tired of fighting, we are tired of being courageous, we are tired of winning, we are tired of defeating our enemies". The results of the withdrawal and this statement of personal political belief to the world media has thus brought us to the Gaza situation of today.

Then he goes on to state that if the idea is to replace the Hamas with PLO/Fatah, which the Arabs themselves in Gaza already rejected in democratic elections, then "the Peace Process" is dead.

Finally, Pipes helps the reader to understand that the Gaza war is distracting from the real existential threat to Israel from Iran. He quotes "the French parliament published an important technical report in mid-December, establishing that "there is no longer doubt" about the military purposes of the Iranian nuclear program, and that it will be up and running in 2-3 years." This he indirectly suggests should have been the military target during this political window that the American period of transition of government has allowed.

The inference should be that if the the true threat to Israel had been taken care of, the Hamas threat would have disappeared, or at best been greatly diluted.

It's a thought provoking short article and can been read HERE.
